Enjoying spirit of Ramadan also for non-Muslims
agosto 22nd, 2009 | 2 Commenti
Today the Ramadan 2009 starts (actually in Lybia and Turkey the Ramadan starts one day before, according to a different interpretation of Holy Qur’an (Arabic: القرآن al-qur’ān, literally “the recitation”; also sometimes transliterated as Quran, Qur’ān, Koran, Alcoran or Al-Qur’ān).
The first Ramadan in a Muslim country, for a foreign visitor or expat (also with a different religious credo), is unique experience, amazing and at the same time contrasting, for what you can feel. From one side, meeting people fasting all the day, without drinking, smoking, eating.. restaurants and bar closed, but the ones inside malls and hotels, opened for the non-Muslims and covered from eyes of Muslims. From the other side, joy and spirit of being together with friends and relatives, for the Iftar, end of fast, when you can eat and drink, starting with a datter, as prophet Muhammad used to do.
We are not inviting you to change your religion, but to live a unique experience.
We do remind you that during Ramadan, you cannot eat, drink or smoke in public locations till the sunset.

The sad part is that, especially in Dubai, Ramadan seems to be all about the Iftar parties. The “all you can eat” for 149 dirhams nights.
While, Ramadan is to feel what “poor people” feel, and hence increase being grateful for food, drinks and such. It became commercialized, just like Christmas is for Christians.
You are absolutely right Michael..
