Ayele Abshero e i suoi colleghi Etiopi hanno trasformato la Dubai Standard Chartered Marathon 2012 in un appendice del libro dei record. Abshero, 21 anni appena compiuti, ha completato il percorso in 2:04:23: il più veloce debutto vincente della storia e il quarto tempo più veloce per una maratona. “I thought I could run 2:04 today,” ha dichiarato dopo aver ricevuto il trofeo e un assegno di $250,000 da His Excellency Abdulrahman Al Owais, ministro emiratino della Salute e della Cultura, , e da Jonathan Morris, Standard Chartered CEO negli Emirati Arabi.

Le prime tre donne nella gara femminile, vinta dalla campionesas uscente Asselefech Mergia Medessa, hanno tutte infranto la barriera delle 2:20:00.

Abshero, campione del mondo 2009 Junior Cross Country World Champion, ha condotto alla fine il tro etiope, con Dino Sefir secondo in 2:04:50, e Markos Geneti terzo in 2:04:54, entrambe le migliori prestazioni personali.

Mai nella storia di una maratona, tre uomini avevano rotto il muro delle 2:05 in una corsa; a Dubai quattro uomini hanno superato questa linea. Il National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) ha registrato temperature sotto zero nella zona montagnosa di Jebel Jais a Ras al Khaimah e annuncia che ci saranno temperature rigide per tutta la settimana. Le previsioni del NCMS infatti annunciano: “Cold weather during daytimes to very cold during night. The cloud amount will increase at times, especially over the northern areas, with chance of light rain. Winds will be west to northwesterly, moderate to fresh in general. Sea will be moderate to rough with wave height 3 – 5 / 6 ft offshore.” Secondo il  NCMS le temperature minime raggiungeranno gli 0°C nelle zone montuose degli Emirati Arabi, con delle punte di 5°C. Mentre sulle fasce costiere le temperature raggiungeranno un minimo di 13°C.
