Together with her sister ship Costa Luminosa, the Costa Deliziosa is Costa Cruises’ “top of the range”, the most exclusive and innovative ship in the fleet. Costa Deliziosa’ features of the combine to create an experience of “pure pleasure” that will last the entire length of the cruise vacation. Costa Deliziosa will delight her Guests with the exclusiveness of its atmospheres, its welcoming and smiling service, the space and the comfort of its public areas and private cabins, with its state-of-the-art entertaining facilities, with the beauty of its itineraries, Dubai and Northern Europe, but even with its restoring and relaxing atmospheres of the Samsara Spa and its most refined cuisine: a real journey among new tastes and aromas for a new “dimension” of pure pleasure.

The Costa Deliziosa’s grand maiden cruise departs from Savona on February 5, 2010. This one-off itinerary will last 38 days: the first part will be a 21-day extravaganza from Savona to Dubai, crossing the Red Sea and including ports of call in Egypt, Jordan and Oman, while the second, 17-day stretch will head east to India and the Maldives. Customers can book either leg or both. Until May 2010 the Costa Deliziosa will be based in Dubai, from where she will offer exclusive 7-day cruises around the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Bahrain.

Conceived by the celebrated architect and interior designer Joseph Farcus, the Costa Deliziosa stands out on account of her exclusive and spectacular design. This stat-of-the art design is characterized by the use of premium materials such as various types of marble and granite, stucco applied by spatula using the technique known as “spatolato veneziano” and other decorative interior finishes including “parchment scroll” lamé, refined Zebrano wood and Wenge timber, Murano glass, and stylish polished and glazed steel, 970 “La Murrina” Murano chandeliers. Featuring in the stunning atrium, very much the focal point here as on all Costa ships, are fine works of art, notably “Sphere” by Arnaldo Pomodoro and a piece called “Delizia fisica e Delizia intellettuale” (Physical Delight and Intellectual Delight), by leading contemporary Italian painter Mario Donizetti. Onboard the Costa Deliziosa the art gallery offers pieces of artists who worked for Costa Deliziosa and other ships in Costa fleet, with a na new figure of the crew staff, the Art Director, entirely dedicated to free guided tours for guests to discover the rich art collection of ship, which includes 340 original works.

There are endless opportunities for fun and entertainment on board the Costa Deliziosa, all of them based on cutting-edge technology. Starting from Costa’s 5 “C” Wonders:

-          a spectacularly entertaining 4D cinema with sound, lighting, images and special effects that combine to create a multi-sensory experience hitherto unheard of on a cruise ship;

-          the most professional Golf Simulator on any cruise ship, featuring thirty-seven 18-hole virtual courses plus an outdoor area of 100 square meters with a putting green;

-          the Grand Prix driving simulator: situated in one of the most spectacular places on board, this attraction is not a videogame but is produced from an original GP car and is the most accurate representation ever of Grand Prix driving on the world’s best racing circuits with the same software and technology used by the F1 champion drivers themselves in training;

- PlayStation, a first for the global cruise industry. Starting with PlayStation World, an area on the ship totally dedicated to latest generation PS3-exclusive video gaming, PlayStation 3 being Sony’s multimedia entertainment system. Guests are able to enjoy PlayStation 3 also from the comfort of their own cabins, thanks to the “PlayStation on demand” service, with a large choice of videogames for rent. Plus PlayStation theme nights on the main lido deck using the big screen for total entertainment:

-          roller-skating track.

Onboard the Costa Deliziosa a wi-fi internet connection is available both in cabins and in public areas.

The leading-edge innovations also extend to environmental compliance and protection. The Costa Deliziosa and the Costa Luminosa, entered into service on May 2009, are the first ships in Italy and one of the first in the world to be equipped for “cold ironing”, namely a system whereby vessels are plugged into shoreside electrical power, enabling generators to be shut down during stopovers in port. And that’s not all: on board there is 100% waste separation, recycling of aluminum, glass and other waste streams, and production of water from desalination plants. Also, the Costa Deliziosa includes various additional special emission-reducing measures.

Another surprise in store is the ship’s theater. This show lounge is a highly sophisticated structure which have a surface area of 1,300 m², arranged on 3 levels, with a height of about 10 meters, and seating capacity of over 800. It features amenities and technology setting an example for similar entertainment facilities built ashore. In particular, advanced LED technology, with around 14,000 LED lights, ensure a special effects capability so spectacular as to constitute, in itself, a “show within the show”.

If you’d rather see a video, there’s the Giant 18 m² Screen, with special technology which can be used for daytime projection of video clips as well as nighttime film screenings. The Big Screen is located in the central pool area, which is some 2 decks high and can be used all year round thanks to the sliding glass roof.

To complete the “pure pleasure experience” also sport, wellness and superb cuisine. On board Guests can go jogging or skating on the roller-skating track, see how invigorating it is to get some exercise with the sky above and the sea below, or take advantage of the state-of-the-art fitness center, featuring the highly innovative Technogym equipment. In fact, the Costa Deliziosa & Costa Luminosa are the first cruise ships in the world to have a Kinesis room by Technogym, located inside the gym, with equipment that can be used individually or in groups, specially designed to improve your state of health, fitness and muscle tone. Afterwards, why not relax in the Samsara Spa: a fabulous wellness center that is one of the most complete and exclusive ever built on a cruise ship (about 3,500 m²), with:

- special Ayurvedic treatments, steam baths and ancient oriental rituals for the body

- conveniently located cabins with direct access to the spa area

- a dedicated restaurant with a special wellness menu.

The pure pleasure experience provided on the Costa Deliziosa also comes in the form of a huge range of culinary delights. Not only the elegant restaurant and the informal buffet in maritime style, but also the Club Restaurant – called Club Deliziosa – with menus created by Ettore Bocchia, Executive Chef at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio and a Michelin-Star restaurateur. The dishes on offer are based on the very best traditional Italian cuisine and top quality genuine ingredients. They are accompanied by a prestigious wine list, devised by international sommeliers, which includes Amarone Stella Aneri Costa Deliziosa Special Reserve 2004, a limited edition of the very well known Italian wine, produced and matured in 15 barrels set aside for the ships in the Costa fleet, as well as other sought after Italian and foreign wines. Meanwhile, the Samsara Restaurant, available for Guests staying in Samsara cabins and suites, will be offering a menu featuring light sophisticated dishes. Guests with a sweet tooth will love the “chocolate bar”, while those who prefer a more classical “old style” ambience will be very much at home in the “cigar bar”.

The Costa Deliziosa is 92,600 gross tonnage and can carry up to 2,826 Guests, accommodated in 1130 cabins, including 772 veranda cabins. This makes her the Costa Cruise fleet member with the highest percentage of private balconies, namely 68%, so Guests will be able to enjoy the superb views during the flagship’s cruises from the comfort of their own staterooms.

Costa Deliziosa – Itineraries for 2010

In May 2010 the liner will return to Savona on a spectacular 18-day positioning cruise, then from there on to Copenhagen, which will be her summer homeport for 7-day cruises to the Norwegian fjords and Baltic cities.

-          uno spettacolare e divertente cinema 4D per immergersi da protagonisti in incredibili avventure grazie a effetti speciali e animazioni mai visti prima su una nave da crociera;

-          un Simulatore di Golf da professionisti, il più evoluto a bordo di una nave da crociera, con  37 campi disponibili (da 18 buche l’uno), e un’area esterna di 100  metri quadrati dotata di “putting green”;

-          il Simulatore di Gran Premio: situato in uno dei punti più panoramici della nave, il simulatore non è un videogioco ma una vera monoposto che riproduce fedelmente la guida di un’auto da GP sui più famosi circuiti internazionali, la stessa usata dai veri piloti per allenarsi;

-          Playstation, una esclusiva che solo Costa Crociere può offrire. A cominciare dal Playstation World, un’area interamente dedicata al videogaming di ultima generazione, attrezzata esclusivamente con PlayStation 3, il sistema di intrattenimento multimediale di casa Sony, e videogiochi di ultimissima generazione. La Playstation 3 è disponibile anche on demand in cabina con un’ampia scelta di videogiochi a noleggio. Sono inoltre previste serate Playstation sul maxi schermo della piscina centrale;

-          l’area benessere, che offre  trattamenti ayurvedici esclusivi, bagni di vapore e antichi rituali orientali per il corpo;

-           comode cabine con accesso diretto all’area;

(fonte: wikipedia)

Asbestos available on black market in DubaiA recent report in the Khaleej Times says asbestos is still readily available in Dubai on the black market, despite a government ban on the substance. While representatives from the Dubai Municipality Environment Department say they are not aware of any black market trading of the hazardous material, the news agency says industry sources confirm it is easy to find illegal asbestos sales in Deira and Satwa.

The United Arab Emirates passed a law in 2006 banning the sale of sheets of asbestos. Asbestos has been linked to diseases including asbestosis, a severe scarring of the lungs; and mesothelioma, a deadly cancer that affects the lining of the lungs and, more rarely, the abdomen.

The Dubai Municipality is striving to put checks in place that would oversee the removal of asbestos from demolition sites and ensure that it is disposed of properly, but workers says they are regularly approached by people offering to buy the asbestos they are removing from a site, the Times reports.

It is estimated that between 70 and 80 percent of homes in Dubai contain some asbestos. The material is found most commonly in asbesots building sheets, but has also been identified in asbestos water pipes, floor tiles and decorative wallpaper.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring silicate mineral with long, thin fibrous crystals. The word asbestos (ἄσβεστος) is a borrowed Greek adjective meaning inextinguishable. The Greeks termed asbestos the miracle mineral because of its soft and pliant properties, as well as its ability to withstand heat.

Asbestos can be toxic. The inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause serious illnesses, including malignant lung cancer, mesothelioma (a type of malignant neoplasm dependent mostly from exposure to asbestos), and asbestosis (a type of pneumoconiosis). Since the mid 1980s, the European Union and most developed countries have banned asbestos. Since January 1 2005 the European Union has banned all types of utilization of asbestos Directive 1999/77/EC and extraction, manufacture and processing of asbestos products Directive 2003/18/EC.

Asbestos generally is not dangerous unless it is disturbed, when it releases microscopic fibers that can be inhaled and which remain in the body indefinitely. A large part of the problem is that people are unaware of the lurking danger and expose themselves to these fibers during home renovation projects.

Asbestos has been popular because of its low cost, so it is more commonly found in lower cost accommodations, the Times reports.

Original Post: Asbestos Still Being Sold Despite Ban
Martin Croucher

http://www.khaleejtimes.com/DisplayArticle08.asp?xfile=data/theuae/2009/March/theuae_March86.xml&section=theuae

DUBAI – Potentially carcinogenic asbestos building materials are still being sold on the black market, despite a government ban, experts have warned.

Between 70-90 per cent of homes in Dubai contain some asbestos, which can cause cancer when particles are inhaled, according to two demolition industry managers charged with asbestos removal.

Ed Ferrero, senior manager at GTS Holdings in Dubai, said that building sheets containing asbestos were still available in some areas of the country.

“We were involved in a major project in a cargo area of Port Rashid last year which required the removal of 600,000 tonnes of asbestos,” he said.

“During the project we had everyday people approaching us asking if they could buy the asbestos sheets that we were removing. I was horrified.”

Hamdan Al Shaer, Head of the Environment Department at Dubai Municipality, said that he was not aware of anyone selling asbestos on the black market, but stressed that it was illegal. “Asbestos sheets are no longer allowed to be sold,” he said.

However, industry sources say that several small “back-street traders” in the Deira and Satwa areas of Dubai still sell asbestos sheets.

In 2006, the UAE Cabinet issued a law stating that sheets of asbestos, which has fire-resistant properties, could no longer be sold.

In addition, the law states that a survey needs to be conducted before demolition to see whether there is any asbestos in the building. If any is found, it must be removed and disposed of an approved way.

However, in some cases, asbestos can remain in a building if a survey is carried out by someone who does not have proper training. The issue becomes a problem once demolition begins.

Using the traditional demolition technique of a ball and crane was inappropriate, Ferrero said. “This causes massive amounts of asbestos dust to explode in the air and cover nearby communities. There are many cases where residents have complained because of worries over health.”

Asbestos fibres are normally only harmful when they are stirred up in dust form, for instance at the time of demolition.

In the United Kingdom, some 5,000 workers die every year through illnesses linked to asbestos exposure, according to the Health and Safety Executive.

Dubai Municipality has also introduced a local law where officials can check whether a survey and removal has been carried out before granting a demolition permit.

Companies in the UK require a ‘Hazardous Waste Carriers’ license before they can carry out asbestos removal. Ferrero said no formal certificates is required in the UAE and many demolition companies here simply did the survey and removal themselves.

“We carry the formal qualifications from the UK and we were registered with the Dubai Municipality on those grounds,” said Chris Ferguson, technical director at Angus Asbestos Removal. “However, a lot of those who have also been registered do not carry the same qualifications.”

Despite the Cabinet ban against asbestos building sheets, several other asbestos products, such as water pipes, have remained legal to sell and use in building.

In the UK, asbestos sheets were banned as early as 1970 but asbestos pipes were banned only in 2000.

According to Ferguson, asbestos can be found in other products such as floor tiles and decorative wallpaper. “The absolute majority of homes in Dubai have some form of asbestos in them,” he said.

Since asbestos is a cheap building alternative, it is typically more often found in low-cost accommodation rather than large villas, he said.

Of all the precious metals, gold is the most popular as an investment. Investors generally buy gold as a hedge or safe haven against any economic, political, social or currency-based crises. Investment in gold can be done directly through bullion or coin ownership, or indirectly through gold exchange-traded funds, certificates, accounts, spread betting, derivatives or shares.
Investors generally buy gold for two main reasons: because of the perception that gold prices will rise and thus that they can gain financially, and/or as a hedge or a perceived safe haven against any economic, political, social or currency-based crises. While prices may rise or fall, in recent years, Gold has outperformed the stock market. In fact, over the past 10 years, gold has quadrupled.

But that is the problem with owning gold bars. How do you hide them? Clearly wondering around the airport with them is not a good idea. Under the bed? What about the maid? Bury them in the garden? Are you even sure that they are gold bars? Gold-plated tungsten has the same weight, so be sure to melt them down occasionally just to be certain, they might have been switched.

It is all very well owning a few items of jewelry and storing them in a modest safe to avert the evil eye. But if you are investing thousands or millions of dollars in gold then you need to adopt a more sophisticated approach.

The Dubai Gold Securities exchange traded fund is the perfect local solution. You get a certificate for one-tenth of an ounce of gold which is held against physical gold in a London depository run by HSBC.

Even though some people worry about and whether they would be redeemable in an Armageddon disaster situation, ETFs are still an alternative chance of investing in gold.
Exchange Traded Fund (definition by www.investorwords.com). A fund that tracks an index, but can be traded like a stock. ETFs always bundle together the securities that are in an index; they never track actively managed mutual fund portfolios (because most actively managed funds only disclose their holdings a few times a year, so the ETF would not know when to adjust its holdings most of the time). Investors can do just about anything with an ETF that they can do with a normal stock, such as short selling. Because ETFs are traded on stock exchanges, they can be bought and sold at any time during the day (unlike most mutual funds). Their price will fluctuate from moment to moment, just like any other stock’s price, and an investor will need a broker in order to purchase them, which means that he/she will have to pay a commission. On the plus side, ETFs are more tax-efficient than normal mutual funds, and since they track indexes they have very low operating and transaction costs associated with them. There are no sales loads or investment minimums required to purchase an ETF. The first ETF created was the Standard and Poor’s Deposit Receipt (SPDR, pronounced “Spider”) in 1993. SPDRs gave investors an easy way to track the S&P 500 without buying an index fund, and they soon become quite popular.

But of course you also have the problem of carrying them to your country..

Dubai Police apprehended the suspects in a daring $1.6 million gold heist in the Dubai International Airport within 48 hours late last month. This case highlights the security issues surrounding gold ownership, and for local investors points to the usefulness of exchange traded funds to own gold.

The Dubai airport heist was no daring daylight raid by armed men. Rather a jeweler with 25 gold bars in his luggage was tracked by a gang who walked off with his suitcase when he put it down and looked away. Apparently they had learned of his insecure gold carrying habit, and for good measure immediately sent the booty to Costa Rica via a courier service, hidden in electronic equipment. The jeweler did not see a thing but the Dubai Police has far a very modern and effective security system that came to the rescue.

Keep gold safe

Yet how likely is that, or that the third parties fail, although again DGS says that even this would make no difference to the holder’s entitlement. Surely you are far more likely to be robbed like the jeweler in Dubai airport if you insist on holding physical gold.

An alternative is the Perth Mint Depository System in Australia from a AAA-rated, 100 per cent government owned institution, which charges nothing for storage of unallocated gold and no commission for buying and selling it.

The place to keep gold is in a vault, don’t carry it around in your luggage!
