Dubai (UAE): Despite a mid-race burst by pre-race favourite Eliud Kiptanui, it was Kenyan David Baramasai who stunned a red-hot field to win the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon 2011 (Friday).
The 23 year-old made it three straight wins at the classic distance crossing the line in 2h:07m:18s to land a cheque for $250,000 – the biggest in distance running – by just under a minute from runner-up and fellow Kenyan Evans Cheruiyot (2:08:17). Third home for the second year running in 2:08:54 was Ethiopian Eshetu Wendimu with Kiptanui pulling out in the latter stages.
In the women’s marathon, Ethiopian Asselefech Medessa gave herself an early birthday present of a cool $250,000 by winning in a time of 2h:22m:45s, just three seconds outside of the course record. Medessa, who turns 26 tomorrow (Sunday), won by 16 seconds from Lydia Cheromei of Kenya (2:23:01) with Sweden’s Isabella Anderson in third (2:23:41).

“It was a big surprise for me as I was really just trying to finish in the top ten,” said Baramsai, who collected his trophy from HH Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed Al Maktoum. “Once the last pacemaker had gone it was tough and I had the wind in my face but I just kept pushing on from the 35km point.”

The first Kenyan to win the world’s richest race since 2007, Baramasai won his first marathon in Kass in 2009 and followed that up with a second victory in Nairobi a year later. His Dubai win, however, sliced a huge three minutes of his personal best and seems set to take him to the next level.

Medessa, who finished third in last year’s London Marathon, may have run just outside her personal best but she insists she is on course for even greater things, including breaking into the exclusive sub 2:20 club.

“I’ve had pains in my legs for a while and it’s thanks to my manager that I have been able to get over the injury,” she said. “”I’m still not 100 per cent and I think when I am completely free of injury I can be faster than 2:20 on this course.”

Asked when she though she knew she would win, Medessa said she was nee r sure of victory until the last minute. “Probably at the 41km mark,” she smiled. “I was fighting all the way with Lydia (Cheromei) and I was only confident once she was behind me and out of the way.”

While the marathon was the big box office event on a morning when dark skies and intermittent rain greeted the athletes, for the UAE it was an historic day in the women’s 10km with two national team athletes completing a memorable 1-2 finish.

Betihem Belayneh Deslagn was first home in 33m:07s with Alia Saeed Mohammed in second place some 14 seconds adrift. Third home was Ethiopia’s Belainesh Yami Gurmu in 35:04. In the men’s 10km, it was a Moroccan double with Ihya Bem Youssef (30:38) in first ahead of compatriot Othmane Chaibi (31:14) with Ethiopian Yassin Kedr Ebba in third (31:43).

Dubai (UAE): A world-class field of elite men and women will compete for the richest first prize in distance running when the 2011 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon gets underway on Friday (January 21).
After three consecutive victories by Ethiopian running legend Haile Gebrselassie, the world’s richest marathon is open to a posse of young pretenders to his crown with race favourite Eliud Kiptanui heading a talented field that features 16 men who have all broken 2h:10m for the classic 42km distance.
With a first prize of $250,000 on offer, the competition is expected to be fierce in a race that is held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai and staged under the aegis of the Dubai Sports Council.

Kiptanui and five rivals have all breached 2h:07m but it’s the young Kenyan who is the man to watch after a blistering time of 2h:05m:39s when he won in Prague last May. Kiptanui made all the running, with a second half faster than the first, and took two minutes off the course record with the 17th fastest in history.

His second European marathon was not so successful, but a fifth place in Berlin four months later in 2h:08m:05s (a world record time just two decades earlier) could hardly be called a failure for a young man still learning his trade.

“He’s in good shape for Dubai,” said Kiptanui’s manager Volker Wagner. “There’s no pressure and he can do whatever he wants. He wants to go for the world record at some point, but maybe not this time; just run the course, see what it’s like, and prepare for next year”.

Chala Dechase (2h:06m:33s) and Eshetu Wendimu (2h:06m:46s) are back for another crack at the Dubai distance having finished second and third to Gebrselassie last year, while if Evans Cheruiyot has finally conquered the injuries which have hampered him since his Chicago 2008 win, in a personal best 2h:06m:05s, then he too should figure.

Add to the mix Deressa Chimsa (2:07:54), Sammy Mugo (2:08:20), Muguleta Wami (2:08:32), David Kemboi (2:08:34), Dereje Tesfaye (2:08:36), Laban Kipkemboi (2:08:38) and the ingredients are there for the most open race in years when the marathon gets underway at 7am on Friday (Jan 21).

In the women’s division, former winners Berhane Adere and Askale Magarsa of Ethiopia lead the contenders in their battle for the big prize, while last year’s third place finisher Helena Kirop, also a record-breaking winner in Prague four months later, is just as likely as Kiptanui to make it a double win for the pair of Kenyans.

In addition to Berhane (2:20:42) and Askale (2:21:31), Atsede Baysa (2:22:02), Aselefech Mergia (2:22:38), Koren Yelela (2:24:33), and Roba Guta – at just two seconds slower – are all in the frame to win over one of the fastest marathon courses in the world.

“It’s a very powerful field of elite athletes for both the men and women’s marathon,” said event director Peter Connerton at a press conference staged with sponsors, officials and athletes at the event’s official hotel The Address Dubai Marina.

“We are delighted to welcome all of them to Dubai for what should be a memorable race. We already have the biggest field in the event’s history with over 14,000 competitors spread across the marathon, the 10km and the 3km Fun Run – it should be quite a day.”

The marathon will get underway from outside the American University just off the Sheikh Zayed Road at 7am, while the competitors in the hugely popular 10km will start fifteen minutes later from the same start line.

Runners competing in the 3km will have to wait until 11am before they get the chance to shine, starting and finishing outside the Al Thuraya Tower in Dubai Media City.

As well as the sporting side of the $1 million event, the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon will also feature a Marathon Village in the Dubai Media City Amphitheatre area with food and beverage stands, sponsor tents and entertainment throughout the day. Entrance to the village and to watch the event is free of charge.

The Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon is also supported by The Dubai Sports Council, Dubai Holding, “Official Outfitter” adidas, The Address Dubai Marina, Dubai Eye 103.8 FM, Khaleej Times, TNT, Gatorade, Aquafina, Fitness First, Men’s Fitness, Plan B and by government departments Dubai Police, RTA, Dubai Municipality DHA and the Dubai Ambulance Services.

Dubai (UAE): Entries for the 2011 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon – scheduled to get underway at 7.00am on Friday (Jan 21) – have now closed with event organisers predicting a record turn out in all three racing categories.
Since the event was first staged with just over 1,800 runners in 2000, Dubai’s appetite for distance running and an interest in health and fitness has grown to such an extent that more than 14,000 runners are expected to descend on Dubai Media City for the big day.
In all, more than 50,000 runners of all ages, abilities and nationalities have competed in either the marathon, the 10km and the 3km Fun Run over the years with this week’s record turn out set to increase that figure by more than 25%.
“Extending the deadline for registration has allowed late comers to register online but we have to draw a close with one week to go,” ...

In all, more than 50,000 runners of all ages, abilities and nationalities have competed in either the marathon, the 10km and the 3km Fun Run over the years with this week’s record turn out set to increase that figure by more than 25%.

“Extending the deadline for registration has allowed late comers to register online but we have to draw a close with one week to go,” said event director Peter Connerton. “It’s important we know exactly how many are going to run on the day as we need to ensure adequate water, isotonic drinks and sponges as well as medals and t-shirts for our participants.”

With dehydration being one of the biggest problems faced by marathon runners, isotonic drinks supplied by Gatorade will be available at six stations along the route with full bottles provided at the 10km, 15km, 20km, 25km, 30km and 35km stations. In addition, water supplied by Aquafina will be available at every 2.5km starting from 5km with the last drink available at the 40km mark. In all, around 100,000 500ml plastic bottles of water have been supplied for the needs of the marathon.

With entries now closed, all runners will have been advised to collect their run numbers from the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon desks at the Arjaan Rotana Hotel in Dubai Media City today (Wednesday) and tomorrow (Thursday) from 9am to 9pm to ensure everyone has their runner’s pack and is ready for the start line.

“The marathon and 10km road race will start outside the old Hard Rock Café building and American University at 7.00am and 7.15am,” said event general co-ordinator Ahmed Al Kamali. “The 3km Fun Run will get underway from the Radisson Blu Hotel opposite Dubai Media City Amphitheatre at 11.00am.”

Meanwhile, organisers have also advised participants and their families to make use of public transport and enter Dubai Media City from Exit 32 on the Sheikh Zayed Road.

“There are extensive parking facilities at Dubai Media and Internet City but with so many people descending on the site at the same time, taking a taxi might be the preferable option,” added Connerton. “The public is also advised not to access the race from the Jumeirah Beach Road, Al Sufouh Road or Al Wasl Road direction as the roads will be closed from 3.00am and not open again until 2.00pm.”
