‘UAE Strategy for Green Development’ — a national, nine-year initiative to develop a sustainable economy — has been announced by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai. The announcement coincided with the launch of the World Future Energy Summit 2012, being held in Abu Dhabi.

Il Chicago Beach Hotel fu demolito nel 1997, per fare spazio ai moderni resort: il Jumeirah Beach Hotel nasce indatti sulla terra precedentemente occupata dal Chicago Beach Hotel. Fu così che il nome “Chicago Beach” fu cancellata dal vocabolario “turistico” di Dubai.

Dubai Chicago Beach Hotel was the Public Project Name for the construction phase of the Bouj Al Arab Hotel until HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced the name of his unique hotel.

“Chicago Beach” disappeared from Dubai’s vocabulary with the demolition of Chicago Beach Village and the development of Jumeirah Beach Hotel.

Nel Jumeirah Beach Hotel è possibile trovare ancora due tracce significative del Chicago Beach Hotel: due dei venti ristoranti attualmente presenti nel resort nascono sullo stesso stile del suo precedessore. Il ristorante Der Kellar nasce dalle ceneri del Bierkellar del Chicago Beach Hotel mentre il Beachcombers mantiene anche il nome del suo predecessore.

Il Kavi Sammelan e Mushaira è una riunione di poeti rinomati provenienti dal subcontinente indiano e di poeti residenti nei UAE. Divenuto un evento ufficiale del Dubai Shopping Festival negli ultimi sette anni e tenuto per commemorare il giorno della Repubblica (Indian Republic Day), il Kavi Sammelan e il Mushaira è una tradizione letteraria portata avanti da molti secoli. L’evento è un’occasione molto attesa nei circoli letterari Hindi di Dubai e negli UAE e testimonia la partecipazione di personalità sociali e letterarie eminenti.

The Kavi Sammelan and Mushaira is a gathering of renowned poets from all across the Indian sub-continent and resident poets in the UAE. An official event of Dubai Shopping Festival since the past seven years and held to commemorate the Indian Republic Day, Kavi Sammelan and Mushaira relives a literary tradition spanning many centuries. The event is a much-awaited occasion in the Hindi literary circles in UAE and witnesses the participation of eminent social and literary personalities.

Do not forget that HH Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai is a poet. Sheikh Mohammed began composing Nabati poetry while he was still at school. He says the greatest influences on his development as a poet have been his father, the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, and the UAE President, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. In his youth, when travelling with Sheikh Rashid, Sheikh Mohammed would often take poetry anthologies (he cites Al Mutanabi, Al Buhtori and Abu Tammam as his favourite classical poets) with him to read on the journey, something which has contributed to his extensive poetic vocabulary. Nabati is the name given to a colloquial form of Arabic that emerged with the spread of Islam. As non-Arabic natives accepted Islam into their lives, they began to speak some Arabic, but it was slightly different from classical Arabic and became known as Nabati. It is also known as “Bint al rimal” (lit. Daughter of the sands). Nabati poetry has been a feature of life in the Arabian Peninsula since the 16th century. It is now prevalent in the Gulf and represents a distinct literary voice for the people of that region.

Nabati poetry shows the natural creativity of the Gulf’s inhabitants and represents their roots in this land. Its form and content, literary significance, social function and historical value make it one of the Arabian Peninsula’s great literary treasures.

Dubai (UAE): Despite a mid-race burst by pre-race favourite Eliud Kiptanui, it was Kenyan David Baramasai who stunned a red-hot field to win the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon 2011 (Friday).

The 23 year-old made it three straight wins at the classic distance crossing the line in 2h:07m:18s to land a cheque for $250,000 – the biggest in distance running – by just under a minute from runner-up and fellow Kenyan Evans Cheruiyot (2:08:17). Third home for the second year running in 2:08:54 was Ethiopian Eshetu Wendimu with Kiptanui pulling out in the latter stages.

In the women’s marathon, Ethiopian Asselefech Medessa gave herself an early birthday present of a cool $250,000 by winning in a time of 2h:22m:45s, just three seconds outside of the course record. Medessa, who turns 26 tomorrow (Sunday), won by 16 seconds from Lydia Cheromei of Kenya (2:23:01) with Sweden’s Isabella Anderson in third (2:23:41).

“It was a big surprise for me as I was really just trying to finish in the top ten,” said Baramsai, who collected his trophy from HH Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed Al Maktoum. “Once the last pacemaker had gone it was tough and I had the wind in my face but I just kept pushing on from the 35km point.”

The first Kenyan to win the world’s richest race since 2007, Baramasai won his first marathon in Kass in 2009 and followed that up with a second victory in Nairobi a year later. His Dubai win, however, sliced a huge three minutes of his personal best and seems set to take him to the next level.

Medessa, who finished third in last year’s London Marathon, may have run just outside her personal best but she insists she is on course for even greater things, including breaking into the exclusive sub 2:20 club.

“I’ve had pains in my legs for a while and it’s thanks to my manager that I have been able to get over the injury,” she said. “”I’m still not 100 per cent and I think when I am completely free of injury I can be faster than 2:20 on this course.”

Asked when she though she knew she would win, Medessa said she was nee r sure of victory until the last minute. “Probably at the 41km mark,” she smiled. “I was fighting all the way with Lydia (Cheromei) and I was only confident once she was behind me and out of the way.”

While the marathon was the big box office event on a morning when dark skies and intermittent rain greeted the athletes, for the UAE it was an historic day in the women’s 10km with two national team athletes completing a memorable 1-2 finish.

Betihem Belayneh Deslagn was first home in 33m:07s with Alia Saeed Mohammed in second place some 14 seconds adrift. Third home was Ethiopia’s Belainesh Yami Gurmu in 35:04. In the men’s 10km, it was a Moroccan double with Ihya Bem Youssef (30:38) in first ahead of compatriot Othmane Chaibi (31:14) with Ethiopian Yassin Kedr Ebba in third (31:43).

Held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai, and under the aegis of the Dubai Sports Council, the 2011 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon saw over 14,000 take to the streets for the biggest mass participation event in the Middle East with runners in the marathon, the 10km and the 3km Fun Run.

As well as the able bodied athletes, a number of wheelchair bound competitors took to the streets with Britain’s Rob Smith keeping himself on course for London 2012 with a hard-earned win on his Dubai debut.

“I’m the first wheelchair competitor and close to my personal best in near perfect conditions so I can’t complain,” he said. “The prize money is the biggest of my racing career which is a real bonus. Now I need to get more funding, get a new chair and push on to get better personal bests.”

On hand to present the trophies and medals alongside HH Sheikh Mansour were HE Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the RTA and Vice Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, General Obaid Al Ketbi, Deputy Commander of Abu Dhabi Police and V Shankar, Standard Chartered CEO Europe, Middle East, Africa and the Americas.

The Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon is also supported by The Dubai Sports Council, Dubai Holding, “Official Outfitter” adidas, The Address Dubai Marina, Dubai Eye 103.8 FM, Khaleej Times, TNT, Gatorade, Aquafina, Fitness First, Men’s Fitness, Plan B and by government departments Dubai Police, RTA, Dubai Municipality DHA and the Dubai Ambulance Services.

Shaykh  Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (Al Ain, 1918 – Abu Dhabi, 2 novembre 2004), originario degli Emirati Arabi Uniti (al-Imārāt al-‘Arabiyya al-Muttahida), ne fu presidente dalla fondazione della Federazione – il 2 dicembre 1971 (tuttora si celebra il National day negli emirati) fino alla morte.
Fu padre di Mansur bin Zayd Al Nahyan, presidente onorario del Manchester City dal 2008, e di Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahayan, attuale presidente degli Emirati Arabi Uniti. Nel 1966 divenne guida dell’emirato di Abu Dhabi sul quale la sua famiglia regna da centinaia di anni. Prima del 1971, gli Emirati noti come gli Stati della tregua (Trucial States), con riferimento ad una tregua imposta nel XIX secolo dai britannici ad alcuni sceicchi arabi che non contrastavano attività piratesche miranti a colpire il naviglio transitante nel tratto di mare di loro competenza.

In the early 1960s, oil was discovered in Abu Dhabi, an event that led to quick unification calls made by UAE sheikdoms. His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan became ruler of Abu Dhabi in 1966 and the British started losing their oil investments and contracts to U.S. oil companies.[citation needed]

The British had earlier started a development office that helped in some small developments in the Emirates. The sheikhs of the Emirates then decided to form a council to coordinate matters between them and took over the development office. They formed the Trucial States Council, and appointed Adi Bitar, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum’s legal advisor, as Secretary General and Legal Advisor to the Council. The Council was terminated once the United Arab Emirates was formed.

In 1968, the United Kingdom announced its decision, reaffirmed in March 1971, to end the treaty relationships with the seven Trucial Sheikhdoms which had been, together with Bahrain and Qatar, under British protection. The nine attempted to form a union of Arab Emirates, but by mid-1971 they were still unable to agree on terms of union, even though the British treaty relationship was to expire in December of that year.

Bahrain became independent in August, and Qatar in September 1971. When the British-Trucial Shaikhdoms treaty expired on December 1, 1971, they became fully independent.

The rulers of Abu Dhabi and Dubai decided to form a union between their two emirates independently, prepare a constitution, then call the rulers of the other five emirates to a meeting and offer them the opportunity to join. It was also agreed between the two that Adi Bitar write the constitution by December 2, 1971.

On that date, at the Dubai Guesthouse Palace, four other emirates agreed to enter into a union called the United Arab Emirates. Ras al-Khaimah joined later, in early 1972.
